Automotive Clear Coats

Acrylic clears are easy to apply and affordable but offer shorter durability; urethane clears provide a durable, glossy finish suitable for automotive use and can be catalyzed for extra hardness; ceramic-infused clears add enhanced chemical and scratch resistance but generally cost more and may require specific prep and curing

Surface prep should include cleaning, degreasing, sanding to the recommended grit for the product, and removing dust and silicone contaminants; follow the manufacturer's instructions for tack cloths, adhesion promoters, or primer to ensure proper bonding and to avoid orange peel or adhesion failures

You can apply a new clear over existing clear if the old clear is sound and properly scuffed or sanded to create a mechanical bond; if the existing clear is cracked, peeling, or chemically degraded, removal and reapplication from the basecoat/primer step is recommended

Clear coats are applied by spray gun (HVLP, LVLP, or conventional) for best results; aerosol spray cans are available for small repairs, and some products are formulated for brush or roller, but spray application gives the most even, professional finish

Drying and curing times depend on product chemistry and conditions; tack-free times can be minutes to hours, block-sanding and polishing typically after 24–48 hours, and full chemical cure may take up to 7 days—always follow the manufacturer's recommended times and environmental guidance

Use a respirator rated for solvent vapors, chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated spray booth or outdoors with cross-ventilation; avoid open flames and follow SDS guidance for flash point, disposal, and first aid

Regular washing with pH-neutral automotive shampoo, periodic clay bar and polishing as needed, and applying a compatible wax or sealant will protect the clear; small scratches can often be leveled with fine polishing compounds, while deep damage may require spot sanding and re-clear coating
