Cargo bars come in telescoping spring-loaded, ratcheting, and padded single-piece models; choose based on load size and vehicle: telescoping bars fit a range of widths and are quick to install, ratcheting bars offer higher tension for heavy or shifting loads, and padded bars protect surfaces when contact is frequent

Measure the interior width where the bar will press—usually between wheel wells, cargo area walls, or van sides—and choose a bar with an adjustable range that covers that measurement; allow for a small compression range so the bar can apply pressure

Check the manufacturer's stated load or holding capacity and match it to the expected cargo weight and movement risk; heavier or taller loads and commercial use typically require higher-capacity or ratcheting systems rather than light-duty spring bars

Steel or aluminum shafts provide strength and durability; look for rubber or foam-padded end caps and non-marring surfaces to distribute pressure and protect painted or finished interiors and fragile cargo

Most telescoping and ratcheting cargo bars are designed for tool-free installation—extend or ratchet to fit and lock in place—while some heavy-duty systems may use bolted mounts; always follow manufacturer instructions for locking and safety

Wipe down shafts and pads after use to remove dirt and moisture, check moving parts and ratchets for corrosion or wear, lubricate pivot or ratchet mechanisms lightly if recommended, and store bars in a dry place out of direct sunlight to preserve seals and pads

Ensure bars are properly tensioned and locked before driving, keep hands and fingers clear of compression points during adjustment, use additional tie-downs for heavy or shift-prone loads, and periodically recheck tension during long trips
