Pick an additive based on the specific problem you want to address (e.g., cetane for start-up/performance, lubricity for high-pressure pumps, anti-gel for cold climates), ensure compatibility with your fuel type and emissions systems, and follow manufacturer recommendations for dosage and frequency

Properly formulated additives that are compatible with your engine and emissions hardware should not damage systems; avoid products that are not labeled for use with diesel particulate filters (DPF) or selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and check your vehicle warranty and owner's manual for any restrictions

Frequency depends on the product and purpose: some cleaners are used as a periodic treatment every 3,000–10,000 miles, lubricity or cetane boosters may be added at each fill-up or as directed, and anti-gel treatments are used seasonally when temperatures approach the fuel's cloud point

Additives that restore injector cleanliness, improve combustion (cetane), or restore lubricity can help recover lost efficiency, but real-world gains vary by engine condition and driving habits; they are not a substitute for proper maintenance

Store additives in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, keep containers tightly closed, follow label safety instructions, and avoid mixing different additives unless the manufacturer states compatibility

Diesel additives range from budget under $25 for small-volume treatments to $25–$200 for concentrated or specialty products; choose based on the product's concentration, treated volume, and whether you need ongoing use or occasional corrective treatment
