Propane Torches

Pick a torch based on intended tasks: small handheld torches for soldering and heat-shrinking, larger self-contained torches for brazing or loosening rusted bolts, and multi-jet or high-BTU torches for heavy-duty heating and metalwork. Consider fuel type (disposable vs refillable cylinders), flame control, ignition method (piezo vs manual), and the torch's BTU output and nozzle options

Look for safety features such as a secure regulator or pressure relief valve, flame control/adjustment, a stable base for self-contained units, a child-resistant or lockable trigger, and clear instructions about operating distance and ventilation. Also ensure you have appropriate PPE (gloves, eye protection) and follow manufacturer guidance for storage and leak checks

Refillable torches that accept standard refillable tanks usually have higher upfront cost but lower long-term fuel expense and are better for frequent use; disposable canister torches are cheaper initially and convenient for occasional jobs or portability. Choose refillable if you plan regular heavy use or want lower ongoing cost

For light tasks like soldering, brazing small copper fittings, or thawing frozen parts, 5,000–15,000 BTU is usually sufficient; for heavier heating, brazing larger metal pieces, or loosening seized bolts, look for 20,000+ BTU or multi-jet torches. Many consumer torches specify flame temperature and BTU output to help match the job

Regularly inspect hoses, connections, and seals for cracks or leaks; perform a soapy water leak check after changing cylinders. Store cylinders upright in a well-ventilated, cool location away from direct heat and ignition sources, disconnect torches when not in use, and follow local regulations for propane storage and disposal

Propane torches can safely heat bolts, nuts, and metal components when applied carefully, but avoid direct flame on rubber, plastic, painted surfaces, wiring, and sensitive sensors; use heat shields, localized heating, and controlled short bursts to minimize collateral damage. For temperature-sensitive work, use a temperature-indicating method or lower-BTU torch

Plan for replacement tips/nozzles, extra O-rings and seals, fuel refills or replacement cylinders, tip cleaner files, flame arrestors if required, and appropriate PPE. If using a refillable system, include the cost of an initial tank fill and periodic refills in your budget
