RV Sealants

Select sealant based on substrate and movement: use silicone or polyurethane for flexible roof seams and vents, but choose specialized butyl or butyl-based tape for quick lap-seam repairs; check compatibility with your roof material (EPDM, TPO, fiberglass, or painted metal) and look for UV resistance and flexibility ratings

Prioritize weather and UV resistance, good adhesion to your RV’s materials, high elongation/flexibility to handle thermal expansion, and a proven temperature range; mildew resistance and paintability may also be important depending on location

Clean the area of dirt, oil, and old sealant; dry thoroughly; remove loose material and oxidized roofing with a recommended cleaner and a scraper or solvent as appropriate; use a primer if the sealant manufacturer recommends one for that substrate

Some sealants are paintable—typically polyurethane and select acrylics—but silicone generally is not paintable; follow the manufacturer's cure time, which is often 24–72 hours, before painting to ensure proper adhesion and finish

Inspect seals annually and after severe weather, re-caulk or replace failed sections, keep seams clean, and address fastener holes or shrinkage promptly; maintaining rooftop coatings and clearing debris will extend sealant life

Work in well-ventilated areas, wear gloves and eye protection, follow solvent and curing safety instructions, use a compatible caulking gun for cartridges, and avoid applying sealant in temperatures outside the manufacturer’s recommended range
