Match the spring type (leaf, torsion, or axle-mounted) to your trailer's suspension, confirm the spring rating or load capacity equals or exceeds your trailer's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) per axle, and verify dimensions (length, eye-to-eye or stud spacing, thickness) fit your existing mounting points

Calculate the load per axle by dividing the loaded trailer weight by the number of axles, then choose springs with a combined capacity at or above that per-axle load; manufacturers often list per-spring or per-axle ratings to help match capacity

Leaf springs are durable and common on utility trailers and handle heavy loads but take more space; torsion axle springs provide independent wheel motion and smoother ride but require torsion axles; coil springs are less common and offer good ride quality but may need more complex mounting

Measure eye-to-eye length for leaf springs or overall installed length for torsion assemblies, record spring thickness, number of leaves (if applicable), and center-to-center distances of mounting holes or studs, and compare these to replacement specifications

For balanced performance and even wear, replace springs in pairs on the same axle (or both traction sides for torsion setups); replacing a single spring can cause uneven ride height and handling differences

Keep springs clean of debris and rust, lubricate moving mounts and shackles as recommended, inspect for cracks or sagging periodically, and replace worn U-bolts, bushings, and hardware when performing spring service
