Look for compliance with current national safety standards (slat spacing under 2 3/8 inches), a fixed mattress support or certified conversion hardware, no drop-side mechanisms, non-toxic finishes, and sturdy construction without loose parts or entrapment hazards

Use a crib mattress designed for your crib size with a snug fit—no more than two fingers' width between mattress and side—and a firm, flat surface to reduce suffocation risk; avoid soft bedding, pillows, or crib bumpers for infants

Cribs typically span a wide range: budget models and mini cribs are available under a few hundred dollars, while mid-range and convertible cribs average higher; more expensive units often include solid hardwood construction, conversion kits, or designer finishes, whereas lower-cost options may use composite materials and simpler designs

Most cribs are suitable until the child reaches the manufacturer's height/weight limit or starts climbing out, commonly between 35 and 50 inches tall or around 2–3 years old; convertible cribs provide a clear pathway to toddler beds if longevity is important

Regularly tighten hardware per the assembly manual, inspect for loose or damaged parts, clean surfaces with mild soap and water, avoid harsh chemical strippers, and replace mattresses or worn components if they become misshapen or broken

Convertible cribs can be cost-effective if you plan to use the unit through toddler stages; verify which conversion stages are included (toddler bed, daybed, full bed), whether conversion hardware is supplied or sold separately, and that the crib meets current safety standards in all configurations
