Rectal digital thermometers are considered the most accurate for newborns and young infants; forehead (temporal) and ear thermometers are less invasive and faster but can be less accurate in certain situations, especially for very young or uncooperative babies

Look for accuracy and clinically validated measurements, quick read time, a memory recall function, an easy-to-read display or backlight, a fever alert or color coding, and hygienic probe covers or non-contact operation depending on preference

Follow the manufacturer's instructions, generally wiping probes or contact surfaces with isopropyl alcohol or mild soapy water, replacing disposable probe covers between uses, and storing the device dry and at room temperature; avoid submerging electronic units unless specified as waterproof

If a reading contradicts symptoms (e.g., feverish behavior with a normal reading) or seems inconsistent, wait a few minutes and retake the temperature following proper placement; take two measurements with the same method or confirm using a more accurate site such as a rectal reading for infants

Non-contact infrared thermometers are convenient for quick screening and for sleeping children, but their accuracy can be affected by distance, ambient temperature, and skin conditions; for definitive assessment, confirm elevated readings with a contact method recommended for the child's age
