Choose a base that is explicitly compatible with your infant car seat model or brand, fits your vehicle (check vehicle owner's manual and base fit guides), offers the installation method you prefer (LATCH or seat belt), and meets current safety standards and ease-of-use features like level indicators and tightness indicators

LATCH uses lower anchors and a top tether or stability strap for simpler installation in many vehicles, while seat-belt installation uses the vehicle's seat belt and may be required if a vehicle's LATCH weight limits are exceeded; both methods are safe when installed correctly according to the car seat and vehicle manuals

Look for features such as a clear level indicator, anti-rebound or stability leg, load leg or rebound bar for added crash stability, easy-release buttons for removing the carrier, and compatibility with multiple stroller systems if you need travel-system functionality

A correctly installed base should sit tightly with less than 1 inch of movement side-to-side or front-to-back at the belt path, show the proper level indicator angle, and follow the installation steps in both the base and vehicle manuals; many manufacturers also provide instructional videos and certified fitting stations for verification

Some manufacturers sell replacement bases for current carrier models, but you should never use a base or carrier that has been involved in a crash, is beyond the manufacturer’s expiration date, or whose history is unknown; always verify compatibility and the base’s age with the manufacturer before purchasing used

Car seat bases typically have an expiration date printed on them or in the manual, commonly 6–10 years from the manufacture date; check the molded label for manufacture and expiration dates and follow manufacturer guidance for storage, cleaning, and end-of-life disposal

Regularly inspect for cracks, damaged components, and proper functioning of release mechanisms, wipe plastic parts with mild soap and water (avoid harsh solvents), and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning any fabric covers and for periodic checks to ensure hardware and indicators remain accurate
