Most standard and convertible cribs use a standard crib mattress measuring about 52 × 28 inches; always measure the interior dimensions of your crib and look for a mattress that leaves no more than a 1-inch gap on any side to ensure a safe fit

Waterproof or liquid-resistant covers protect the mattress core from leaks and are useful for hygiene; removable, machine-washable covers make cleaning easier and are recommended for infants and toddlers prone to accidents

A well-maintained crib mattress typically lasts until the child is out of the crib or approximately 3–5 years; replace it earlier if it becomes saggy, damaged, heavily stained, or no longer fits securely in the crib

Look for mattresses that meet federal flammability standards and consider voluntary certifications such as GREENGUARD Gold, CertiPUR-US, or OEKO-TEX for low chemical emissions; also check that the mattress fits the crib snugly and has no loose components

Firm, thin mattress pads that are specifically designed for cribs and attach securely are acceptable; avoid soft toppers, pillows, or heavy bedding that could create suffocation hazards

Spot-clean spills promptly with mild soap and water, air-dry thoroughly, and use a washable mattress cover to minimize deep cleaning; avoid saturating the mattress core and follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions for best results
