Choose based on location and weather resistance: indoor cameras focus on compact size and aesthetics, while outdoor models require an IP rating (IP65/IP66 or higher) for dust and water protection, durable housings, and temperature range specifications for your climate

Pick at least 1080p (2MP) for clear facial detail; 4MP–8MP options provide sharper images for larger areas. Check the horizontal field of view (typically 70°–120°) to ensure one camera covers the intended area or plan multiple cameras for full coverage

Wired or PoE (Power over Ethernet) cameras offer reliable power and consistent bandwidth for higher video quality and are better for long-term installs; wireless cameras simplify installation and are suitable for temporary or small setups but may be affected by Wi‑Fi range and interference

Look for infrared (IR) LEDs with specified range (e.g., 30–100 feet) and low-light technologies like starlight sensors or wide dynamic range (WDR) for improved detail in mixed lighting; check sample night images or specs for real-world performance

Dome cameras commonly support local storage via microSD cards, network video recorders (NVRs) with PoE cameras, or cloud subscriptions; decide based on retention needs, local versus cloud access, and whether continuous or motion-triggered recording is required

Verify power method (12V DC, PoE) and ensure your router and switch support the camera's bandwidth, especially for multiple high-resolution streams; for PoE, confirm switch or injector compatibility and cable length limits (standard Ethernet up to ~100 meters)

Regularly clean the dome cover with a soft cloth and mild cleaner to avoid scratches, verify seals and mounting hardware annually, keep firmware updated for security, and monitor for moisture or insect ingress in outdoor units
