Choose based on purpose: color-correcting filters (CTO/CTB) adjust white balance, neutral density (ND) filters reduce light without changing color for longer exposures, and diffusion or softening filters reduce contrast and glare; match filter size or adapter to your light source or lens and check filter density/strength ratings

Glass filters generally offer better optical clarity and scratch resistance, while polymer/gel filters are lighter and less expensive but can scratch more easily; check for multi-coatings to reduce reflections and color cast

ND filter strength is measured in stops or optical density and reduces light by a predictable amount (e.g., 1 stop halves light); color-correction filters specify warming or cooling values (e.g., CTO/CTB) and will shift white balance, so adjust exposure and white balance accordingly
