Match speaker type and power to the space: small patio or balcony can use compact, lower-wattage models, while large yards need higher-wattage or multiple speakers. Consider speaker coverage pattern (omnidirectional vs. directional), weather rating (IPX/IP rating or marine-grade), mounting options, and whether you need wired, Bluetooth, or Wi‑Fi connectivity

Look for water- and dust-resistance ratings (IP65/IP66 or higher for heavy exposure) and corrosion-resistant materials or marine-grade construction for coastal areas. UV-resistant housings and sealed drivers help prevent sun and moisture damage over time

Wired speakers generally provide more reliable power and audio quality for permanent installations, while wireless (Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi) offers easier setup and portability. Choose wired for fixed backyard systems or integration with amplifiers, and wireless for temporary setups or where running cable is impractical

Aim for higher continuous power (RMS) and sensitivity for open areas; small patios may be fine with 10–50 W per speaker, while larger yards often need 50–150 W or more per speaker. Also consider speaker sensitivity (dB) — higher sensitivity yields louder output for the same power

Smaller outdoor speakers have limited bass due to driver size and open-air placement. Improve bass by adding a weather-rated outdoor subwoofer, placing speakers near reflective surfaces, or choosing larger enclosure designs when possible

Plan speaker placement for even coverage, use outdoor-rated speaker wire and conduit where exposed, keep cable runs short to reduce loss, and match impedance between speakers and amp. For multi-speaker setups, use proper amplifier power and avoid daisy-chaining too many speakers on one channel

Regularly clean housings of dirt and debris, check seals and mounts for corrosion, tighten hardware, and store or cover portable speakers during extreme weather or winter months. For fixed installations, inspect wiring and replace degraded cable or gaskets as needed
