Measure the viewing distance and projector throw distance, then choose a screen size that fits the wall and provides a comfortable field of view; common aspect ratios are 16:9 for HDTV/most projectors and 4:3 for legacy or computer content. Check your projector’s native resolution and throw ratio to confirm the image will fill the chosen screen without distortion or overspill

In dark home-theater rooms use matte white screens (gain ~1.0) for wide viewing angles and accurate colors; in rooms with ambient light consider high-gain, ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screens to boost brightness and contrast. Higher gain increases perceived brightness but narrows viewing angles and can cause hot-spotting, so balance gain with seating layout

Choose fixed-frame screens for permanent installations and the flattest, most uniform surface; manual pull-down or retractable screens save space and are suitable for multipurpose rooms; motorized screens offer convenience and integration with automation but add cost and require power and mounting considerations

Select a screen that supports the projector’s native resolution—1080p projectors pair with 16:9 screens sized for 1920x1080, while 4K projectors benefit from screens designed for higher-resolution content; the screen itself doesn’t impose resolution but choosing the correct aspect ratio and a smooth, uniform surface preserves image detail

Account for wall or ceiling structure, screen weight, and required clearances for retractable or motorized units; ensure the screen is mounted level and at an appropriate height so the image aligns with typical seating—professional installation may be advisable for large or motorized screens

Dust gently with a soft brush or microfiber cloth; for stains use a mild soap-and-water solution applied with a soft sponge, then blot dry—avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, and rough scrubbing that can alter the surface or finish. Store retractable screens retracted and protect fixed-frame screens from direct sunlight and extreme humidity to preserve coatings

Projection screens range from budget options under $100 for basic manual or portable models, to several hundred dollars for larger fixed-frame or higher-performance ALR and motorized screens; price generally reflects screen size, material quality, gain or ALR properties, and mechanism complexity rather than brand alone
