Stage Subwoofers

Match subwoofer wattage and driver size to the venue and PA system: larger drivers (15–18") and higher continuous power (several hundred to a few thousand watts) deliver more low-frequency extension and SPL for larger stages, while smaller 10–12" subs and lower power suit small clubs and portable rigs

Look for balanced XLR and TRS inputs/outputs for reliable signal routing, a dedicated low-pass crossover or crossover outputs, phase/polarity switch, and level controls; built-in limiters and selectable crossover slopes improve integration with main speakers

Active (powered) subwoofers include amplifiers matched to the driver and are generally easier to integrate and set up on stage; passive subs require an external amp sized to the sub's power rating and offer more flexibility if you already have a compatible amplifier

Frequency response determines how deep and accurately the sub reproduces bass; for impactful live sound aim for subs that extend to at least 35–40 Hz for general music and below 30–35 Hz if you need deep sub-bass for electronic genres or large venues

Look for rugged plywood or high-density composite enclosures, reinforced corners, metal grille protection, recessed handles, and pole-mount or stacking features to withstand road use and simplify stage setup

Place subs centered or distributed evenly on stage, use crossover settings and phase/polarity switches to align time/phase with main speakers, and adjust crossover frequency and slopes so the subs and mains overlap smoothly around the crossover point (commonly 80–120 Hz)

Regularly inspect connectors and cables, keep cooling vents and heatsinks clean, check for loose hardware and damaged cones, avoid overdriving to prevent driver or amplifier damage, and store in dry, temperature-stable conditions or use padded covers during transport
