PoE (Power over Ethernet) kits deliver power and data over a single Ethernet cable for each camera, offering more reliable feeds and simpler wiring for wired installations; wireless kits reduce cabling but may need power at the camera or have more variable connectivity, making PoE better for consistent performance and wireless preferable where running cables is impractical

Choose at least 1080p (2MP) for general monitoring, 4MP–8MP for clearer identification at distance, and consider higher frame rates (20–30 fps) if you need smooth motion capture; balance resolution and frame rate against increased storage and network bandwidth requirements

Storage needs depend on camera count, resolution, frame rate, and recording mode; as a rough guide, a single 1080p camera continuously recording can use about 40–60 GB per day, so multiply by camera count and desired retention days, or use motion-triggered recording to greatly reduce required capacity

Many NVRs support ONVIF standard cameras and offer mobile apps or web access for live view and playback, but compatibility and feature support vary by brand, so check ONVIF compliance and app features for multi-vendor setups before buying

Ensure your router and local network can handle the combined bandwidth of all cameras, isolate cameras on a separate VLAN if possible, change default passwords, keep firmware updated, and enable encrypted remote access to reduce unauthorized access risk

Plan for periodic firmware updates, check HDD health if the NVR uses mechanical drives, clean camera lenses and ensure proper weatherproofing for outdoor units, and verify scheduled recordings and alerts regularly to confirm the system is operating correctly
