Choose lumens based on room lighting and screen size: 1,000–2,500 lumens is suitable for dark rooms and small to medium screens; 2,500–4,000 lumens works well for rooms with ambient light or larger screens; above 4,000 lumens is better for conference rooms or bright environments

For sharp text and detailed images choose at least 1080p (Full HD) for movies and gaming; 4K resolution is beneficial for large-screen home theater use and high-detail content; WXGA or 720p can be acceptable for basic presentations or small-screen setups

Look for HDMI for video sources, USB for media playback or power, and wireless options (Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth) if you need streaming or screen mirroring; VGA or composite can help with older devices, and an audio out or built-in speakers are useful if external sound is not available

Check the projector's throw ratio to match projector placement with desired screen size; short-throw or ultra-short-throw models can project large images from close to the screen, while standard-throw projectors need more distance—measure your room and use the manufacturer's throw-distance chart or calculator

Lamp-based projectors typically have lamp lives of 2,000–6,000 hours and require replacing the bulb, while LED and laser projectors often last 10,000–30,000+ hours with lower maintenance; replacement lamp costs vary by model, so factor in long-term operating cost when choosing a type

Check the manufacturer's warranty length and what it covers (lamp, electronics, labor), consider availability and cost of replacement lamps or parts, and plan for routine cleaning of air filters and vents to maintain performance and lifespan
