Empty all pockets and spot-clean stains with mild soap and a soft brush; many backpacks can be hand-washed and air-dried—check manufacturer instructions and avoid machine drying to protect padding and hardware

Seek reflective trim or panels, bright colors for visibility, and secure closures; for younger children, a name tag or ID pocket and detachable safety whistle on the straps can be helpful
