Common materials are resin/plastic, treated wood, and metal; resin and UV-stabilized plastic resist rot and rust and require less maintenance, treated or cedar wood offers a natural look but needs sealing or staining periodically, and metal can be very durable if powder-coated or rust-resistant but may heat up in sun

Look for tight-fitting, raised or sloped lids with rubber or foam seals, built-in drainage or ventilation holes to prevent moisture buildup, and a reinforced lid or latch area that accommodates a padlock for security if needed

Expect a broad range: budget options are typically under $50, most mid-range durable models fall between $75 and $200, and larger or premium material boxes can exceed (price varies); average prices for this category are around the mid-hundreds depending on size and construction

Many resin and plastic deck boxes come with tool-free or simple assembly and are lightweight empty, but once filled they can be heavy—consider built-in wheels, a two-person lift, or placing the box on a flat, permanent spot if you plan to store heavy items

Clean plastic or resin boxes with mild soap, water, and a soft brush; rinse and dry thoroughly. For wood, inspect annually for rot or finish wear and reapply sealant or stain as needed. Keep lids closed, use ventilation or silica packs to reduce interior moisture, and avoid prolonged direct contact with wet ground

Some deck boxes are rated for occasional seating and list a maximum weight capacity—check the manufacturer's weight rating and reinforcement details; avoid using non-rated boxes as seats to prevent damage or injury
