Choose a pot with a diameter 1–3 inches larger than the plant’s current root ball for small to medium plants; for large or fast-growing plants, select a pot 2–4 inches larger to allow root growth and reduce frequent repotting

Terracotta and clay provide breathability and are good for indoor and sheltered outdoor use but can crack in freezing temperatures; plastic and resin are lightweight and weather-resistant outdoors; metal and concrete are durable outdoors but can heat up and need drainage considerations indoors

Drainage holes are recommended to prevent waterlogged roots; if using a pot without holes, add a layer of coarse material and use well-draining mix, or place the plant in a plastic nursery pot with holes inside the decorative pot and monitor watering carefully

Select lighter materials like plastic or resin for balconies and hanging planters to reduce load, and heavier materials like ceramic, concrete, or stone for large outdoor specimens or windy locations to improve stability

Look for frost-resistant materials, removable liners for winter storage, adequate drainage to prevent freezing damage, and UV-resistant finishes for prolonged sun exposure

Repot every 12–24 months for actively growing houseplants or when roots are pot-bound; increase pot volume by about 25–50% (one pot size up) rather than drastically larger to avoid excess soil retaining moisture

Garden pots commonly range from budget options under $50 to higher-end or larger pieces that can be several hundred dollars; average prices for typical household pots are commonly in the mid-range, so compare material, size, and durability when budgeting
