Brass and stainless steel are the most durable for outdoor faucets due to corrosion resistance, while zinc alloys are lower cost but less durable. Look for corrosion-resistant finishes and ceramic or brass valves for longer life

Frost-free (freeze-proof) designs extend the shutoff valve inside the heated wall, reducing freeze risk; vacuum-breakers or backflow preventers protect against contamination. Ceramic disc valves and solid brass stems reduce leak incidence compared with cheap washer-style valves

A DIY install is possible if you have basic plumbing skills: shut off and drain water, cut and solder or thread pipes if needed, and ensure secure mounting and a watertight connection; you may need a pipe wrench, plumber's tape, soldering torch or threading tools. Hire a plumber for complex feeds, heated-wall frost-free installs, or code compliance

Shut off and drain outdoor lines if possible, disconnect hoses, and insulate the faucet and exposed pipes; periodically check for leaks, replace washers or packing nuts as needed, and lubricate moving parts if manufacturer recommends it. Frost-free faucets still benefit from insulation and annual inspection

Most faucets use standard 3/4" garden hose threads, but verify thread size before buying. If installing a vacuum breaker or backflow preventer, ensure the device matches thread type and local plumbing codes and allows for easy hose attachment
