Look for a balanced weight you can handle for extended use (lighter for repetitive tasks), reinforced socket or welded head-to-handle joins for durability, and heat-treated or forged steel tines to resist bending and wear

After use, clean off soil and debris, dry thoroughly, apply a light coat of oil to metal parts to prevent rust, tighten or inspect the handle connection regularly, and store the tool off the ground in a dry place

Pitchforks commonly fall across budget options under $50 to higher-end models above $100; spend more for premium materials (forged steel tines, long-lasting handles, professional-grade construction) if you use the tool frequently or need heavy-duty performance
