Swimming Pool Bromine

Bromine is a halogen sanitizer used to kill bacteria and control algae; it is more stable than chlorine at higher pH and typically produces less odor and fewer irritating byproducts, making it common for hot tubs and heated pools. Chlorine acts faster and is often less expensive, but bromine remains effective over a wider temperature range and in warmer water

Tablets are convenient for floaters and feeders and provide steady long-term levels; granules dissolve quickly for shock treatments or rapid adjustments; cartridges or pre-filled feeders are used for automated dispensing. Select the form that matches your feeder equipment and how quickly you need to adjust sanitizer levels

Maintain free bromine levels typically between 3–5 ppm for pools and 3–6 ppm for spas, testing at least 2–3 times per week in pools and daily in spas or heated pools. Use a reliable test kit that measures free/bound bromine and total bromine, and adjust dosing after heavy use, rain, or when combined chlorine rises

Store bromine products away from heat, direct sunlight, and incompatible chemicals like acids and organics; do not mix different sanitizers directly. Some bromine products can corrode certain metals over time and may require compatible feeders or floating dispensers and regular inspection of seals and plastic components

Estimate based on pool volume and target ppm—product labels provide dosing per gallon or per 10,000 gallons; consumption increases with higher bather load, temperature, sunlight, and organic contamination. Keep spare product on hand for regular dosing and periodic shock treatments

Bromine is suitable for vinyl, plaster, and fiberglass pools and is commonly preferred for hot tubs because it tolerates higher temperatures; however, check manufacturer recommendations for any specialized surfaces or equipment and use the appropriate form and feeder for your system

Store bromine in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in original, closed containers away from children and pets; use gloves and eye protection when handling, and follow label instructions for spills and disposal. Avoid storing near combustible materials or reducing agents
