Choose an NRR based on noise exposure: 20–30 dB NRR is typical for sleep and most leisure activities, 30 dB or higher for very loud environments like construction or shooting ranges, and lower NRR with acoustic filters for situations where hearing clarity matters

Reusable earplugs cost more upfront but can be more economical over time if cleaned and maintained; they often offer better fit options, materials (silicone, thermoplastic), and features like replaceable filters or carrying cases that improve longevity and comfort

Insert earplugs following manufacturer instructions: roll foam plugs to a thin cylinder before insertion, hold for expansion; for silicone or flanged plugs, gently push and twist to form a seal; try different sizes or tips and perform a simple occlusion check (reduced outside noise or your voice sounding muffled)

Clean reusable earplugs after each use with mild soap and water, rinse and air-dry completely before storing in a clean case; replace foam plugs after they lose shape and replace tips or filters per manufacturer guidance to prevent buildup and ear irritation

Properly fitted earplugs reduce harmful noise without damaging hearing; however, excessive attenuation can impair situational awareness (alarms, speech), so choose appropriate NRR or filtered options for safety-sensitive situations and consult a hearing professional if you experience discomfort or ear symptoms

For air travel, look for earplugs with moderate attenuation and pressure-equalizing or vented designs to reduce cabin pressure discomfort and background noise while allowing some speech and announcement awareness; compact, washable, and reusable options simplify packing and repeated use
