Empty drainable pouches when they are one-third to half full to reduce stress on the seal; change the entire pouching system every 3–7 days or sooner if the adhesive fails or skin irritation occurs, following individual clinician guidance

Choose pouch capacity based on your typical output volume—smaller, low-profile pouches for discreteness and larger-capacity drainable pouches if output is frequent or liquid. Also consider pouch length, opacity (transparent vs opaque), and whether a tail-end clamp or integrated closure is preferred

Some systems offer reusable components (two-piece systems with reusable bases) or pouches with recyclable packaging; these can reduce waste and may lower ongoing costs, while single-use pouches are simpler but generate more waste. Expect a range of prices across brands, with budget options under $50 and mid- to higher-end products averaging higher per pack

Rinse drainable pouches with cool water and mild soap after emptying, allow to dry thoroughly before storing, and keep unused supplies in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight; follow manufacturer instructions for any antiseptic or deodorizing steps

Consider flange cutters or stoma measuring guides, skin barrier wipes or paste, adhesive removers, pouch closures or clamps, and disposal bags; choose accessories based on personal needs like activity level, skin sensitivity, and mobility
