For seat cushions, medium-firm to firm foam (ILD ~30–40) with density 1.8–2.8 lb/ft³ is common for good support and durability; softer options (lower ILD) suit decorative or back cushions while higher densities improve long-term shape retention

Combining a firm base core with a softer comfort layer balances support and cushioning—firmer base preserves shape, while a softer top layer (memory or convoluted foam) adds pressure relief and surface comfort; multi-layer constructions also help control heat and motion transfer

Foam durability depends on density, quality, and usage: higher-density foams typically last longer and resist sagging, average home-use cushions often last several years; frequent heavy use or low-density foam will compress and lose resilience faster

New foam can emit a temporary chemical odor (off-gassing) that dissipates with ventilation over a few days to weeks; choose CertiPUR-US or similar certified foams for limits on VOCs, heavy metals, and flame retardants to reduce health concerns

Use removable covers and follow label instructions; spot-clean foam with mild detergent and water, avoid saturating the foam, air-dry completely to prevent mold, and rotate cushions regularly to promote even wear and shape retention

Upholstery foam prices vary by type, density, and brand: budget sheet foam and basic cushions can be found under $50, mid-range and specialty foams commonly fall between $50–$300, while high-density or engineered multi-layer options are higher; balance cost against expected durability and comfort needs
