Iron-on Transfers

Match the transfer material to the fabric: heat-transfer vinyl (HTV) for cotton, polyester blends, and many synthetics; printable transfers for light-colored cotton and poly-cotton; and specially labeled transfers for dark fabrics. Check the transfer's recommended fabric list and required heat settings before buying

At minimum you need a household iron or heat press that can reach the specified temperature, a hard flat surface, and a heat-resistant tape or Teflon sheet; a heat press gives more consistent pressure and timing. Also have scissors or a cutting machine for vinyl and a carrier sheet if included

Lower-cost packs often contain basic HTV or printable sheets suitable for occasional projects, while higher-priced options may offer specialty finishes (glitter, metallic), larger sheets, or commercial-grade durability; overall market prices range from budget sets under $50 to higher-end kits and rolls for professional use

Wait the recommended cure time (usually 24 hours), wash garments inside-out on a gentle cycle with cold or warm water, and avoid high-heat drying or ironing directly over the design; follow the specific product's temperature and washing guidelines for best longevity

Durability depends on material quality, correct application temperature and pressure, fabric type, and washing habits; professionally applied HTV and heavy-duty transfers can last many washes if care instructions are followed, while cheaper transfers may peel or fade sooner

Use heat-resistant gloves or tools to avoid burns, work in a well-ventilated area to avoid fumes when heating some vinyls, follow manufacturer temperature and press-time guidelines, and keep transfers and tools away from children and pets

Many HTV products are designed for layering—apply the base layer first and then subsequent layers at recommended temperatures—but check compatibility and recommended press sequences on the product label to prevent melting or poor adhesion
