Stainless steel is durable and heat-resistant for hot pasta, plastic is lightweight and inexpensive but may warp with heat, silicone collapsible colanders save storage space and tolerate boiling water if rated for heat, and enamel or ceramic are attractive but heavier and more fragile

Look for wide holes or slotted patterns that drain quickly without letting small items slip through, stable feet or a wide base to sit in the sink, comfortable handles or lips for secure lifting, and a rim that fits or rests on your sink if you hand-rinse frequently

Most stainless steel, plastic, and silicone colanders are dishwasher-safe; rinse immediately after use to prevent food drying in holes, scrub with a brush for stuck food, and avoid abrasive pads on coated surfaces to prevent scratching or chipping

Stainless steel and high-heat-rated silicone colanders are safe for hot liquids; thin plastic colanders can warp or leach if exposed to boiling water, so check the manufacturer's heat tolerance before using with scalding liquids

Measure sink width and pot diameter; choose a colander with a rim or lip that can rest on your sink edges or a size that comfortably fits inside the pot for tipping, and consider models with folding or removable handles for flexibility

Colanders commonly range from budget under $20 to more premium models above $50; higher cost often reflects durable materials (heavy-gauge stainless), better construction, or designer finishes, but many affordable options perform well for everyday use
