Look at foam density and ILD (indentation load deflection) ratings when available—higher density and appropriate ILD for the intended use typically indicate better durability; also check cover materials, stitching, and whether the foam is molded or layered, since those construction details affect long-term shape retention

Use removable, machine-washable covers when possible; spot-clean foam with mild detergent and air-dry completely to avoid mold, avoid machine-washing raw foam, keep foam out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent degradation, and rotate cushions regularly to distribute wear

Consider allergies and off-gassing—look for CertiPUR-US or similar certifications for low VOC emissions, check firmness and contouring for pressure relief if you have back or wrist issues, and ensure dimensions match your chair or desk to maintain proper posture

Prices vary by type and construction: budget options are often available under $50 for simple wrist rests or thin desk pads, mid-range seat and ergonomic cushions commonly fall between about $50 and $200, and higher-end molded or specialty foams can cost more; average category prices cluster around the mid-hundreds for full-size seating solutions

Many polyurethane and open-cell foams can be trimmed with a sharp knife or electric foam cutter for custom fit; closed-cell or molded foams are harder to reshape, so check product guidance before cutting and avoid altering foams covered by warranty
