Expanding Files & Wallets

Match the file size to the paper you use (letter, legal, A4) and check the number of expanding pockets or sections; common capacities accommodate 6–24 sections or expand 1–3 inches for bulky receipts and folded documents

Look for reinforced bottoms and seams, heavy-gauge plastic, coated canvas, or ripstop fabric; metal or strong plastic rivets, secure closures (zippers or snap buttons), and stitched handles or straps indicate longer-lasting construction

Useful extras include labeled tabs or interchangeable index cards, clear ID windows, internal zip or mesh pockets for small items, pen loops, and exterior pockets for quick access to frequently used documents

Many expanding files made from water-resistant plastics or coated fabrics offer basic protection against spills and light moisture, but they are not fully waterproof; for heavy exposure, choose sealed or TSA-compliant cases designed for travel

Empty the file, wipe plastic or coated surfaces with a damp cloth and mild soap, air-dry fully before storing, and avoid overfilling or stacking heavy items to prevent seam stress and deformation
