Foam Boards

Foam boards are commonly available in standard sheet sizes (such as 20x30 inches and 24x36 inches) and in thicknesses from about 1/8 inch to 1 inch; choose thinner boards for lightweight displays and mounting, and thicker (1/2–1 inch) boards for freestanding signs, exhibits, or structural prototyping

Paper- or clay-coated foam boards are suitable for framing and photo mounting because they accept prints and adhesives well; polyethylene or PVC foam boards resist moisture and are better for short-term outdoor use or humid environments, though prolonged outdoor exposure still requires weatherproofing

Use a sharp utility knife or foam board cutter with multiple light passes on a straightedge to avoid tearing; for visible edges, sand lightly if compatible, or cover the cut edge with trim, washi tape, or mat board for a more finished appearance

Foam board strength depends on thickness and core material; for heavier attachments, reinforce with backing strips, use low-profile standoffs or mounting clips, and select thicker boards or a rigid backing to prevent sagging when mounting vertically

Store foam boards flat in a dry, temperature-stable area away from direct sunlight and heavy loads; keep them in protective sleeves or between rigid flats to avoid bending, and clean surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth—avoid solvents that can dissolve the core or face

Look for boards made with recycled content, recyclable PVC-free cores (such as polypropylene) or paper-faced constructions from sustainably sourced paper; check product specifications for recycled percentages and end-of-life recycling guidance

Prices vary by size, thickness, and material, with budget options under $20 per sheet and specialty or large-format boards costing more; prioritize material and thickness based on use—choose inexpensive paper-faced boards for temporary displays and invest in thicker or moisture-resistant boards for durability
