Smearing and bleed-through depend on ink formulation and paper weight: water-based inks dry faster and tend to smear less on coated papers, while heavy or uncoated papers reduce bleed-through; testing on a sample sheet is recommended

Most liquid highlighters work safely over standard printed text and ballpoint or gel ink, but they can reactivate some solvent- or alcohol-based inks and certain marker inks, so test on a small area if compatibility is a concern
