Look for comfortable grip and balanced weight for long sessions, a reliable lead-advance mechanism (push-button or twist), refillable lead and eraser compartments, and a sturdy clip or retractable tip if you carry it in a pocket

Budget options under $50 typically provide basic reliability and replaceable lead, while higher-priced pencils offer better materials (metal barrels), finer tolerances for consistent lead feed, and longer durability; choose based on how often you use the pencil and whether build quality or warranty matters to you

Use the correct lead grade and size for your hand pressure (harder leads like HB/H for light pressure), avoid extending too much lead beyond the tip, consider pencils with anti-break or cushioned mechanisms, and keep the tip clean from debris

For general office writing, HB or 2B leads balance darkness and durability; H grades suit fine, light lines for drafting, and softer B grades are better for darker, smoother marks or sketching

Refill leads according to the size stamped on the pencil, replace the eraser when depleted (many pencils store spare erasers or leads under the cap), and periodically clear the tip and feed channel of broken lead with a thin wire or professional cleaning tool if jams occur

Metal-bodied pencils usually offer greater durability, a more substantial feel, and better balance for extended use, while plastic pencils are lighter and often less expensive; choose based on preferred weight, budget, and how much wear the pencil will see
