Regularly wipe the flap and frame with mild detergent, check and replace worn seals, remove debris from tracks, and for electronic models replace batteries per manufacturer guidance or clean contacts to prevent missed reads

Ensure the flap size prevents injury (no sharp edges), use selective-access models if you need to keep other animals out, secure the installation to prevent drafts, and monitor pets accustomed to free indoor-outdoor access for risks like traffic or predators
