Measure the weight or volume of your usual purchase (dry food cup counts or bag weight) to match container size and avoid frequently refilling or excess empty space

Look for airtight seals (gaskets or locking lids), food-safe plastic, stainless steel, or BPA-free materials, and opaque construction to limit light exposure. Additional useful features include built-in scoops, removable inner liners for cleaning, and stackable or space-saving shapes

Budget options typically cost under $50 and often use lightweight BPA-free plastic with basic snap-top or screw-top seals; expect fewer premium features like heavy-duty wheels, stainless steel, or integrated measuring scoops. Midrange to higher-priced choices add durability, better seals, and convenience features

Empty the container, wipe or wash with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry completely before refilling to prevent mold. Regularly check seals and hinges for wear, and deep-clean containers between food types or every few weeks to remove oils and residue

You can store an opened bag placed inside a larger airtight bin to keep the original bag intact and provide an extra barrier; alternatively, transfer food to a clean, food-safe airtight container to reduce air exposure and pests. Either approach works if the bin forms an effective seal and is kept in a cool, dry place

For kitchens or pantries, choose stackable containers or narrow-profile bins that fit shelves; smaller portable tubs (10–20 liters) suit frequent use. If you need to move heavy containers, look for ones with wheels or integrated handles and secure locking lids to prevent spills

Keep dry dog food in airtight, opaque containers in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes; avoid storing near heat sources. Use containers with tight seals and pest-resistant construction, and practice a first-in, first-out rotation to use older food first
