Horse care sheets are lightweight blankets or sheets designed to protect a horse from dust, flies, or light chill and to keep coats clean. Choose based on purpose (fly protection, stable sheet, cooling/dress sheet), size/fit for your horse’s measurements, material breathability, and fastenings for secure fit during normal turnout or stable use

Measure from the center of the chest to the tail dock and compare to the manufacturer’s size chart; also consider shoulder and girth clearance. Sizes are typically listed in inches or standard horse sizes (e.g., 66"–84"); allow extra room for layering if you plan to use it over other sheets

Material determines breathability, durability, and protection: lightweight cotton or mesh is best for cooling and fly protection, medium-weight polyester offers general stable use and dirt resistance, and heavier ripstop or waterproof fabrics provide extra durability and light weather protection. Look for breathable fabrics and reinforced stress points for longevity

Follow the manufacturer's label, but generally remove loose dirt and hair, use a gentle cycle with mild detergent, avoid fabric softeners, and air-dry or tumble-dry on low if allowed. Repair small rips promptly and check straps and stitching regularly to maintain fit and function

Fly sheets made from fine mesh can significantly reduce insect contact and irritation but are not a guaranteed barrier to all biting insects. Complement with fly masks, sprays, and environmental control for best protection

Prices vary by material and features, with budget options typically under $50 and mid- to higher-end stable, fly, or waterproof sheets commonly ranging higher; average category pricing is in the mid-range, so compare materials and warranties for value

Look for adjustable surcingles, cross surcingles, contoured shoulders, gussets for movement, and rounded tail flaps; soft binding and well-placed seams reduce rubbing, while secure closures and elastic inserts help prevent slipping during activity
