Reptile Terrariums

Pick a terrarium that lets your reptile fully stretch, climb, and thermoregulate; for small lizards and hatchlings a 10–20 gallon equivalent may be sufficient, while adult snakes and larger lizards often need 40–120+ gallon enclosures depending on species and activity level

Common materials are glass, PVC, and acrylic; glass offers visibility and humidity retention, PVC is lightweight and insulated, and acrylic is lighter but more scratch-prone; look for secure ventilation, lockable doors, and seams or frames that resist leaks and retain heat

Ensure the enclosure supports a heat gradient with space for a heat source (pads, lamps), mounting for UVB lighting if keeping diurnal species, and adequate ventilation or mesh panels to control humidity levels appropriate for the species

Basic small enclosures start in low-price ranges while mid to large tanks commonly fall into the $50–$300 range; additional costs for stands, lights, thermostats, and hides can add substantially, so budget for equipment as well as the tank itself

Pre-made terrariums are convenient and often include features like mesh tops and doors; custom or modified enclosures can be tailored for specialized species or larger sizes but require more planning to ensure proper insulation, ventilation, and safety

Spot-clean daily, remove waste and soiled substrate, perform full substrate changes and disinfect non-porous surfaces periodically using reptile-safe cleaners, and avoid harsh chemicals that can harm animals or damage materials

Provide hiding spots, variable climbing and floor space, proper temperature and light cycles, species-appropriate substrate and humidity, and secure lids to prevent escapes; layout should allow natural behavior and easy maintenance access
