Select a pump based on required flow rate (gallons per hour, GPH) and hull size: small tenders typically need 500–1,000 GPH, mid-size runabouts 1,000–2,000 GPH, and larger boats 2,000+ GPH; also match pump type (automatic vs manual) and discharge hose diameter to the pump outlet to avoid performance loss

Automatic pumps use a float switch or integrated sensor to activate when water rises, manual pumps are hand-operated for emergency use, and electric pumps require a 12V/24V power connection and a switch; choose automatic for routine bilge management and manual as a backup

Ensure voltage compatibility with your boat (most are 12V), check amp draw to size fuses and wiring, use corrosion-resistant connectors and a properly rated circuit breaker or fuse close to the battery, and install an inline fuse sized per manufacturer recommendations

Inspect and clean the pump, strainer/sieve, and intake hose regularly to remove debris and oil, test automatic switches periodically, check electrical connections for corrosion, and replace worn hoses or impellers per manufacturer intervals

Look for corrosion-resistant materials such as marine-grade plastics or stainless steel, sealed motor housings rated for bilge use, anti-clog or macerator options if handling solids, and secure mounting bases to minimize vibration and noise

Match the hose inner diameter to the pump outlet size, minimize hose length and bends to reduce head loss, use smooth-bore hose rated for marine discharge, and secure fittings with hose clamps and a properly routed through-hull or deck fitting

Basic submersible or manual pumps for small boats are commonly found under $50, mid-range electric automatic pumps are often in the $50–$150 range, and higher-capacity or specialty pumps (macerators, stainless units) generally cost more depending on flow rate and features
