Boat Fenders

Select fender size based on boat length and displacement: small boats (up to ~20 ft) generally use 4–6 inch diameter fenders, mid-size boats (20–35 ft) use 6–9 inch fenders, and larger vessels need bigger or more heavy-duty fenders; also choose round, cylindrical, or flat shapes based on docking style and rub points

Look for marine-grade PVC or vinyl for common inflatable fenders and heavy-duty foam or rubber for solid fenders; reinforced seams, corrosion-resistant fittings, and UV-stabilized material improve durability

A typical basic setup uses two fenders on each side amidships for short docks and three or more when docking at piers or in rougher conditions; place fenders to protect known contact points like cleats, chocks, and the hull midline where rubbing occurs

Inflatable fenders are lighter, stowable, and adjustable by air pressure but can puncture; solid or foam fenders resist puncture, compress predictably and offer continuous protection but are bulkier and harder to store

Rinse with fresh water after use, clean with mild soap for stains, avoid prolonged UV exposure when not in use, check and repair valves and ties, and store deflated inflatables or out of direct sun to extend life

Ensure fender lines are rated for marine use, the correct length to hang at contact height, and that your cleats, rails, or chocks can handle the load; use webbing or chafe protection where lines pass over edges

Boat fenders generally range from budget options under $50 for basic inflatables to several hundred dollars for heavy-duty solid or specialty fenders; higher-priced models typically offer thicker material, reinforced fittings, or a longer-rated service life
