Choose lights based on your vessel type and length, required light types (masthead, sidelights, stern, all-round, or anchor), power source (12V battery, hardwired, or battery-operated), mounting location, and whether you need LED or incandescent; ensure they meet COLREG/USCG visibility and color requirements for your intended waters

LED lights use less power, run cooler, have longer rated lifespans, and are more compact, while incandescent bulbs are usually cheaper upfront but consume more power and need more frequent replacement; both must meet required visibility and color standards

Select lights that provide the required nominal range for your vessel class—typical small craft use lights rated for 1–3 nautical miles for sidelights and stern lights; product specs list nominal range or candlepower and should comply with navigation light regulations

Look for compliance with relevant standards such as USCG, COLREG (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea), or CE markings where applicable; certified products will state conformity in their specifications

Mount lights according to manufacturer height and location guidelines, use marine-grade wire and corrosion-resistant connectors, fuse each circuit at the battery, secure wiring away from chafe, and test operation and polarity before sealing installations

Regularly inspect lenses and seals for cracks, clean contacts and terminals to prevent corrosion, check and replace bulbs or LED modules as recommended, ensure batteries and charging systems maintain proper voltage, and retest light color and visibility periodically

Basic battery-operated or small incandescent fixtures are commonly available under $50, while marine-grade LED and hardwired multi-light systems typically range higher; prices vary by brand, material, and certification
