Common materials are Kydex/thermoplastic, leather, and nylon: Kydex offers rigid retention and consistent draw, leather provides comfort and a molded fit that breaks in over time, and nylon is lightweight and affordable but less precise in retention. Choose based on desired retention, concealability, durability, and climate tolerance

Look for passive retention (molded fit and friction), active retention (thumb break or hood) if you need added security, and a design that covers the trigger guard fully. Ensure the holster holds the firearm securely during movement and allows a safe, consistent draw and re-holstering without placing fingers inside the holster

Only use holsters specifically designed to accommodate weapon lights, lasers, or taller sights; many standard holsters will not fit modified firearms. Check product specs for compatibility with lights, optic cutouts, or suppressor-height sights before purchasing

For Kydex: clean with mild soap and water and avoid extreme heat; for leather: keep dry, condition occasionally with leather care products, and avoid prolonged moisture; for nylon: wash gently and air dry. Regularly inspect retention, mounting hardware, and stitch integrity
