Roller Derby Skates

Check each brand's sizing chart and measure your foot length standing; many roller derby skates fit true-to-size or run slightly narrow, and you should consider the thickness of your socks and whether you'll use orthotics. If between sizes, skaters often size down for a snug fit that reduces foot movement inside the boot

Derby-specific skates have stiffer boots, low-cut profiles for ankle mobility, durable plate and truck setups, and wheels/plates rated for high-impact lateral play, while recreational skates tend to prioritize comfort, softer boots, and softer wheels for casual skating and cruising

Indoor derby typically uses harder wheels (higher durometer, e.g., around 88A–101A) for speed and durability on polished tracks, while outdoor or mixed-surface use requires softer wheels (lower durometer) for grip and shock absorption; wheel diameter commonly ranges from about 57 mm to 62 mm depending on desired top speed and acceleration

At minimum wear a certified helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads; many leagues also require a mouthguard and may mandate hip or tailbone protection depending on rules and level of contact

Break in boots gradually by short practice sessions, tighten laces progressively for even pressure, and rotate wheels to promote even wear; regularly clean bearings, inspect plates and trucks for cracks or loose hardware, and replace worn wheels or toe stops when performance degrades

Entry-level and recreational roller skates are commonly available under $100, while dedicated derby-ready skates from well-known skate brands often range higher; factor in additional costs for wheels, bearings, toe stops, and protective gear when planning your budget

Some fitness or recreational quad skates can be upgraded with stiffer plates, derby wheels, and higher-performance bearings to improve suitability, but boots designed specifically for derby typically offer ankle support and durability that conversion alone may not match
