Butyl Tape

Select width based on the joint or seam size (narrow for trim, wider for roof seams); thicker tape provides more gap-filling and durability for irregular surfaces; backing material (foil, butyl-only, or film) affects UV resistance and adhesion—foil-backed tapes are better for exposed outdoor use

Clean surfaces of dirt, oil, and loose material with a suitable solvent or cleaner, ensure surfaces are dry and at the manufacturer's recommended temperature range, apply firm pressure or a roller to eliminate air pockets, and overlap seams by at least 1/2 to 1 inch when joining strips

Life expectancy varies by formulation and exposure but many butyl tapes retain performance for several years; UV exposure, temperature cycling, surface movement, and proper surface prep significantly affect longevity—choose UV-rated or foil-backed options for prolonged outdoor use

Most butyl tapes do not accept paint well and painting is generally not recommended; removal can be difficult—residual adhesive often remains and typically requires mechanical scraping and adhesive solvent to clean surfaces

Manufacturers specify application temperature ranges, but generally butyl tape is best applied in moderate temperatures (often above freezing) to ensure pliability and adhesion; very cold or wet conditions can reduce initial tack and bond strength

Compare tape thickness, backing type, UV resistance, stated temperature ranges, and coverage per roll rather than only price; budget options often work for small indoor repairs, while thicker or foil-backed tapes typically cost more but suit outdoor and heavy-duty applications
