Match the countersink diameter to the screw head diameter and choose the angle to match the screw’s head (common angles are 82°, 90°, and 100°); for multi-material work, select a bit sized for the largest material thickness to ensure a proper recess

High-speed steel (HSS) is economical for wood and soft metals; cobalt or carbide-tipped bits are better for abrasive materials and extended use; coatings like TiN or TiAlN can improve wear resistance and reduce friction

You can use countersink bits with a hand drill for general tasks, but a drill press provides more consistent alignment and depth control for precise countersinks, especially in metal or when repeatability is needed

Combination bits that drill the pilot hole and countersink in one step save time and keep alignment between the hole and recess, but separate pilot and countersink operations can be better for very hard materials or when you need different bit sizes

Keep bits sharp by avoiding excessive heat and dulling, use appropriate speeds and lubrication for metal, clean chips after use, and resharpen or replace bits when cutting performance or surface finish degrades

Countersink bits range from budget sets under $20 to professional carbide or specialty sets above $100; higher-cost options typically offer better materials, coatings, and tolerances that improve life and consistency for frequent or demanding use
