Desiccants

Select by moisture capacity (grams of water absorbed per unit weight), form factor (packets, canisters, silica gel beads, clay, molecular sieves), operating temperature range, and compatibility with your product materials; molecular sieves work best for very low humidity and closed systems, silica gel for general use, and clay for cost-sensitive bulk shipments

Estimate based on enclosed volume, acceptable relative humidity, and leakage: use manufacturer absorption charts when available; as a rule, larger or higher-capacity packs are needed for metal tools or long storage periods, while small packets suffice for short-term packaging of small parts

Service life depends on exposure, humidity, and pack size; indicator desiccants change color when saturated and reusable types can be regenerated by heating per manufacturer instructions—replace non-indicating, single-use packs if the product shows signs of corrosion, condensation, or reduced performance

Many silica gel and molecular sieve desiccants are reusable by heating at the temperature and duration specified by the supplier (commonly 120–150°C for several hours for silica gel), ensuring proper ventilation and following safety guidelines to avoid burns or inhalation of dust

Avoid ingestion and keep desiccants away from children and pets; some formulations may be irritants or contain hazardous chemicals—check product safety data sheets for toxicity, dust hazards, and proper disposal instructions

Higher-cost items often offer higher absorption capacity, indicator beads, sealed canisters, or branded quality control; compare capacity per weight, form factor, and regeneration options rather than price alone to match performance to your needs

Choose packets for distributed small items, canisters or desiccant breather cartridges for equipment housings and tanks, and bulk loose desiccant for large cargo or warehouse spaces; consider ease of replacement, containment to prevent dust, and contact with product surfaces
