Keep the indicator clean and lightly oiled on moving parts, avoid dropping or applying side loads to the plunger, store it in a protective case away from moisture and magnetic fields, and have it calibrated periodically depending on use

Consider magnetic bases, articulating holders, test stands, and appropriate arbor or stem clamps that match the indicator stem diameter; ensure the mounting allows the plunger to move along its intended axis without side force
