Confirm the circuit voltage (typically 120V or 240V), the number and type of devices (receptacles, switches, GFCI) to determine gang size, and the wire gauge(s) used (14 AWG, 12 AWG, etc.) so the box has sufficient knockouts and wire fill capacity for safe installation

Plastic (PVC) boxes are nonconductive, resist corrosion, and are common for standard residential non-metallic cable; metal boxes provide greater durability, are required when using metal conduit or where grounding is needed, and must be bonded to the grounding conductor

Calculate wire fill by adding volume values for each conductor, device yokes, and internal clamps per national electrical code rules—then choose a box with equal or greater cubic-inch capacity; deeper boxes increase capacity for multiple cables or larger devices

Look for 'old-work' or 'remodel' boxes with secure internal clamps, flip-out mounting tabs, or external ears that fasten to drywall without access to studs; adjustable-depth and low-profile bezels help align with finished surfaces

Choose boxes labeled for compliance with applicable standards (for example, UL/CSA listings where relevant), match box type to the wiring method and environment (damp/wet locations require rated enclosures), and follow local electrical code and permitting requirements

Once properly installed, outlet boxes require little maintenance; periodically check for loose cover plates or devices, ensure grounding continuity for metal boxes, and replace boxes that show corrosion, cracks, or heat damage
