Common types include angle brackets, mounting plates, shelf brackets, corner braces, and adjustable supports; choose based on load direction (vertical vs. lateral), mounting surface (wood, concrete, metal), and whether you need fixed or adjustable positioning

Steel (mild, stainless) and aluminum are typical for strength; look for stainless steel or galvanized, zinc-plated, or powder-coated finishes for corrosion resistance, especially in humid or outdoor environments

Estimate the total static load including the item weight plus any expected dynamic or concentrated loads, add a safety factor (commonly 2–3x), and select a bracket whose rated capacity equals or exceeds that value when mounted per manufacturer instructions

Use fasteners rated for the bracket material and substrate: wood screws for timber, concrete anchors for masonry, and machine bolts or self-tapping screws for metal; match diameter and length to the bracket holes and substrate thickness and follow manufacturer torque recommendations if provided

Verify the surface is flat, clean, and structurally sound; measure and mark hole locations with a level and square, pre-drill pilot holes sized for your fasteners, and avoid mounting into damaged or hollow sections unless using appropriate anchors

Regularly inspect for corrosion, loose fasteners, deformation, or cracks; tighten hardware as needed, touch up protective coatings when scratched, and replace brackets that show structural damage or excessive wear

Brackets are commonly priced from under $10 for simple light-duty pieces to several hundred dollars for heavy-duty or specialty brackets; higher prices often reflect thicker materials, stainless or treated finishes, higher rated loads, or precision manufacturing
