Choose dies made from high-speed steel (HSS) or alloy tool steel for general-purpose cutting; for harder materials or longer life, consider HSS with coatings such as TiN or black oxide, which improve wear resistance and reduce galling

Adjustable or split dies have a slotted design and a set screw that allows slight size adjustment and tighter fit; they are useful when you need to fine-tune thread fit or compensate for die wear, but fixed solid dies provide more consistent accuracy for production work

Common accessories include a compatible die stock or wrench, cutting oil, and a deburring tool; maintain dies by cleaning chips and coolant from teeth after use, applying light oil to prevent rust, and storing them in protective cases to avoid nicking

Dies can cut in many metals (steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminum) but softer or gummy materials may require frequent chip removal and lubricant, while very hard materials may need specialized dies; use steady, even pressure, back off periodically to clear chips, and use appropriate cutting oil

Sets and individual dies range widely from budget options under $50 to higher-quality kits and specialty dies costing more, with average prices for general-purpose dies around the mid-range; higher-priced dies often offer better materials, tighter tolerances, and coatings for longer life
