Measure the hose outer diameter and the port thread size, verify whether the system uses metric or imperial threads, and match the fitting thread type (e.g., NPT, BSP, ORFS, JIC) to the port specification; consult hose and equipment manuals and, when possible, bring a sample to confirm fit

Choose carbon steel or stainless steel for high-pressure systems; stainless steel resists corrosion for outdoor or marine use; consider zinc or chrome plating and nitrile or PTFE seals for chemical compatibility and abrasion resistance

Select fittings rated at or above your system’s maximum operating pressure, check whether the rating applies to the hose/fitting assembly at your temperature, and allow a safety margin (commonly 1.5–4× the working pressure) for transient spikes

Reusable fittings can be convenient for maintenance and prototyping because they assemble without crimping tools, but crimped fittings generally provide more consistent sealing and higher pressure ratings for permanent installations

Confirm seal material compatibility (e.g., nitrile, Viton, PTFE) with your hydraulic fluid, and verify the fitting’s temperature rating to ensure seals and metal will perform across the system’s operating temperature range

Inspect fittings for corrosion, cracks, and thread damage before installation, torque to manufacturer specifications, replace damaged seals, retorque after initial cycles, and schedule periodic inspections for wear or loosening

Compare parts by material, pressure rating, and certification rather than unit price alone; expect budget options under $50 for basic fittings while higher-grade stainless or specialty fittings can cost more, and prioritize rated components for safety-critical systems
